Founded in 2013, Mawingu started off as a TVWS pilot project for Microsoft’s 4Afrika initiative to improve global competitiveness and digital inclusion in Africa. The pilot which connected schools, hospitals, libraries and the red cross was deemed a success and Mawingu gained additional funding from Angel Investor Jim Forster, Paul G Allen’s Vulcun Inc and OPIC, in order to expand. As Mawingu scales, it builds relationships with small shop owners (otherwise known as Merchants) who in their hundreds, make the low-cost Internet bundles available to purchase across Nyeri, Laikipia and Meru Counties.
Mawingu has two business lines, one that provides WiFi access to consumers via public hotspots and a second that provides broadband quality private WiFi access to homes and businesses in rural Kenya. With Internet access costing as little as Ksh 50/- or $0.50 for 300 MB, Mawingu provides an affordable service available to consumers who are low-income earners, empowering local communities in Kenya, like never before. Consumers within a signal range of a hotspot (WiFi zones), can purchase various bundles on their Internet enabled devices, which are mainly mobile phones. All bundles are valid for up to 90 days.
